Day 1 – Vienna, Austria

Connecting Heritage

Moon view at Josefstädter Straße

Today, I arrived in Vienna and was not surprised by the architecture that greeted me. In the outskirts of Vienna, where I am staying, there are several little odd one-story antique and discount shops, markets and cafes.  The main language spoken in Vienna is German and the currency used is the Euro.

I am staying in District 16-Ottakring, which is on the Western outskirts of Vienna and coincidentally is famous for three of my favorite things:

Ottakringer Beer,

Meinl Coffee Roasting Company, and

the Manner Schnitten Wafers with hazelnut filling in pink wrapping.

The Manner Neapolitaner was invented in 1898

Apart from what Vienna’s 16th District is known for, there are quite a bit of restaurants and markets which mirror the large number of immigrants from Turkey and the Balkans that have taken up occupancy in the 16th District of Vienna.

Enjoying Wiener Melange in Ottakring

I was able to find myself a Wiener Melange, which is German for “Viennese Blend” and is similar to a cappuccino.

If you’re interested in learning more about Vienna’s 16th District: Ottakring, try visiting, http://www.tourmycountry.com/austria/sixteenth-district-vienna.htm.

Please check back tomorrow as I will be visiting the Schönbrunn Palace, the National Library and others.

Cheers,

Bianca

Prague, Czech Republic

The last city we visited during our OWHC adventure was Prague. The Czech capital seems to be much more smaller than Vienna and Warsaw. Within the city center you can go almost everywhere on foot and the average distance between different districts is reachable during one walk. We knew Prague quiet well from the previous visits but the city has still many sites to offer. This time we have discovered what is hidden in Prague’s parks, we visited the Vietnamese temple and again found many places for young locals.

Český Krumlov, Czech Republic

During last three days we visited Český Krumlov – Czech’s second most popular tourist destination. The town was built around a castle in 13th century in Gothic style. Full of charming photo spots, it has a reputation of a city for a one-day visit and unfortunately is very overcrowded. That is why we decided to stay for two nights and discover how the city center looks like when all the tourists go back to their hotels.

Linz, Austria

After big city life in Vienna on our way to Czech Republic we took one day break in cosy Linz which was European Capital of Culture in 2009. Local metropoly located on the both sides of Danube river and between hills offers not only beautiful sights but also gives the possibility to visit very modern museums.

Vienna, Austria

After visiting Warsaw and Kraków, we moved to Austria and stayed for three days in Vienna. The capital of Austria surprised us with its modernity neighboring with historical world heritage monuments. Full of people wandering on the most famous touristic paths just behind the corner hides places and districts where locals enjoy their leisure time.
